Fire protection through Feuerverzinken - Research results and implementation in practice
Hot-dip galvanizing has proven to be an effective form of corrosion protection. However, the corrosion protection provided by hot-dip galvanizing also improves the fire resistance of steel. In recent years, several scientific studies have been carried out on the fire protection effect of hot-dip galvanized steel surfaces. The research project at the Technical University of Munich is particularly noteworthy. Depending on the component, a fire resistance period of 30 minutes (R30) is possible.
With the DASt guideline 027 "Determination of the component temperature of hot-dip galvanized steel components in the event of fire" and the inclusion of the guideline in the MVV TB (Model Administrative Regulation for Technical Building Regulations), the use of hot-dip galvanizing in R30 fire protection applications has been significantly simplified, so that in most cases implementation is possible without any problems if the hot dimensioning is successful.
Fire protection by hot-dip galvanizing has therefore proven to be an economical and sustainable alternative to established fire protection systems and has already been used in many cases. Hot-dip galvanizing makes significantly more economical fire protection solutions possible. There are completely new application possibilities and improved competitive opportunities have been created for steel construction.
The presentation will briefly discuss research results, simplify the verification process and at the same time present several projects in which the use of hot-dip galvanizing in R30 fire protection applications has been successfully implemented.
